Tile & Grout Calculator

To calculate tile and grout, divide the total room square footage by the area of a single tile, then add a 10% to 15% waste margin for cut pieces. For grout, apply the TCNA volume formula based on tile thickness and joint width. A 10×10 ft (100 sq ft) floor using 12×24 inch tiles with 1/8" joints requires 55 tiles (8 boxes at 15 sq ft/box), approximately 12 lbs of sanded grout, and 3 bags of 50 lb polymer-modified thinset.

Grout Formulation: Sanded vs Unsanded vs Epoxy

Choosing the wrong grout can either scratch high-end polished marble or shrink and crack away in wide floor joints:

Sanded Cement Grout (Joints 1/8" to 1/2")

Contains graded silica sand that locks the joint together like structural concrete. Prevents shrinkage cracks in joints 1/8" and wider. Never use on polished marble, glass, or delicate glazed tiles, as the sand will micro-scratch the surface.

Unsanded Cement Grout (Joints 1/16" to 1/8")

Ultra-fine Portland cement powder that flows effortlessly into hairline joints. Essential for rectified porcelain (1/16" joints), vertical bathroom subway tile walls, and polished natural stone. If used in joints wider than 1/8", it shrinks and caves in.

100% Solid Epoxy Grout (Zero Sealing)

A two-part epoxy resin system completely impervious to water, grease, wine, and harsh chemical cleaners. Never requires sealing and will never stain or mildew. Extremely sticky and fast-setting; requires immediate cleanup with warm soapy water.

The 33% Offset Rule: How to Prevent Tile "Lippage"

During kiln firing, long tiles (such as 12×24" or 6×36" wood planks) expand and contract, causing them to bow slightly higher in the exact center than at the edges.

If you install long tiles in a traditional 50% running bond (brick pattern), the highest crown of one tile aligns directly with the lowest corners of its adjacent neighbor. This creates unsightly, stubbed-toe height differences called lippage.

TCNA Standard (ANSI A108.02): For any tile where one edge is 15 inches or longer, offset overlapping joints by a maximum of 33% (1/3 of the tile length). Always utilize a mechanical two-part tile leveling clip system to pull adjacent tiles completely flush while the thinset cures.

Trowel Notch Sizing & Thinset Bed Thickness

Using an undersized trowel leaves air voids beneath the tile, causing hollow sounds and premature tile cracking when walked on:

1/4" × 1/4" Square Notch

For small wall tiles and floor mosaics up to 8×8 inches. Yields ~80–90 sq ft per 50 lb bag of thinset.

1/4" × 3/8" Square Notch

Standard for 12×12 inch residential floor tiles. Yields ~60–70 sq ft per 50 lb bag of thinset.

1/2" × 1/2" Square / U-Notch

Mandatory for Large Format Tiles (LFT, 12×24" and larger). Must "back-butter" the back of every tile with a flat skim coat. Yields ~40–45 sq ft per 50 lb bag.
